How long does the course last?

The course lasts for one year and attendance is compulsory.

How much does the course cost?

The course is free. Students must pay a non-refundable application fee of €100.

Are there any scholarships?

Each student will receive a per diem of €40.00 (which serves as partial reimbursement of expenses incurred) for each day spent at the Orchestra's home location (Scuola di Musica di Fiesole) or in Florence. For tax purposes, the amount received  is considered as a scholarship. This reimbursement will not be paid if a student withdraws or is expelled.


Where can I eat and sleep?

The most cost-effective and convenient accommodation for the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole is the Ostello 7 Santi at 11, viale dei Mille (http://www.7santi.com/it/). You can also arrange for the hostel to provide board.
Other solutions

There are a few restaurants, bars and a bakery near the Scuola.
We strongly advise you to reserve your accommodation well in advance.

How do I get to the Scuola from the station/airport/motorway?

By car:
From Firenze Sud
From Firenze Nord
By train: from the Santa Maria Novella station to Piazza San Marco bus no. 1 and from Piazza San Marco to San Domenico bus no. 7. From the San Domenico stop, walk along Via delle Fontanelle that leads straight to the Scuola.

Auditions are held at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole from october 29 - november 3, 2018. According to a timetable that will be available after October 22.

Yes, but it will not be possible to rehearse before the audition.

I've already been with the Orchestra Giovanile Italiana for two years, can I reapply?

Anyone can apply for an audition provided that they meet the age requirements. The rankings start afresh every year.

Do I need a diploma to take the course?

A diploma is NOT necessary. The quality of the student is assessed during the audition. Students who have yet to graduate and who presumably must attend other institutions must be aware of the significant commitment they are making by joining the Orchestra, as attendance is compulsory.

What is the maximum age for joining the orchestra? What is the minimum age for joining the orchestra?

Students born between 1992 and 2000 may participate.

How is the course structured?

For 2019 the course is divided into several periods according to the calendar that will be published and attendance is mandatory.

How many places are available in the orchestra?

At the auditions we aim to select: 26 violins, 10 violas, 8 cellos, 6 double bass, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, 1 tuba, 3 percussionists, 2 pianists and 1 harp.

How are the chamber music lessons organised?

The chamber music lessons are scheduled for July with six different teachers. An additional period will involve renowned artists performing in concerts with some of the highest ranked students.

What are masterclasses on orchestral excerpts?

They are lessons held by orchestra principals on the main excerpts of an orchestra's repertoire, they aim to prepare the students for auditions with professional orchestras.

Will there be individual lessons?

No, there are no individual lessons. Any of the students who wish to study the instrument they play more in-depth can apply to the Postgraduate Courses offered by the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole and benefit from no registration charge and a discount of 25% of the tuition of the course, subject to an admission exam and provided there are places available. When we go on tour do we still get a per diem of €40?

The per diem of €40 is NOT paid during residencies and/or concerts for which members must spend the night away from the orchestra’s home location, or if organisation requires it. Instead of the per diem, accommodation and board will be arranged and paid for.
For the first period from December 27 2018 to January 4 2019, the Fondazione Scuola di Musica di Fiesole ONLUS will arrange and pay for board at the Ostello 7 Santi or a similar establishment for these days. Therefore the per diem will not be paid.

Is a degree awarded at the end of the year?

The Orchestra Giovanile Italiana does not currently issue a degree, but does issue a Certificate of Attendance in addition to certificates of participation in all the scheduled concerts. These are useful when applying to be included on the ranking of teachers for middle and secondary schools.

Given the orchestra's calendar of activities, how many days can I miss?

- Le richieste di permesso di assenza alle attività didattiche verranno vagliate ed eventualmente accolte dalla Direzione per ragioni di grave eccezionalità, relative a problemi di famiglia, salute o universitari e comunque non in caso di partecipazione ad altre attività concertistiche che dovessero sovrapporsi ai periodi formativi. Non saranno concessi permessi nei giorni di prova con il direttore ospite e nei giorni dei concerti.
- Il parere della Direzione è insindacabile e lo studente vi si sottopone per il solo fatto di firmare il presente regolamento. 
- L’allievo che si assenti ingiustificatamente potrà essere radiato. 
- L’allievo ritirato o radiato non riceverà il 30% residuo della borsa di studio giornaliera.

If I am granted a pass will I still be paid the per diem?

No. The per diem is not paid on the days for which a pass has been granted by the Artistic Director. The per diem is strictly related to active presence.

What documents should I attach to my application?

You must attach proof that you have paid the €100 registration fee, a copy of your passport and a copy of your Italian Fiscal Code.

Where can I audition?

Le audizioni verranno effettuate unicamente presso la Scuola di Musica di Fiesole, in Via delle Fontanelle 24 – San Domenico di Fiesole (FI).
L’Orchestra Giovanile Italiana opera in collegamento con l’European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO), inviando propri commissari alle fasi eliminatorie delle ammissioni. I candidati alle selezioni EUYO 2018/2019 che ottengano una votazione uguale o superiore a 7,50, verranno inseriti nella graduatoria degli idonei e potranno essere contattati per partecipare alle attività del Corso di Qualificazione Professionale per Orchestra - Orchestra Giovanile Italiana. I candidati che sosterranno entrambe le ammissioni (OGI e EUYO), si vedranno riconosciuto il solo voto ottenuto per l'OGI.

Will there be auditions at any Southern Italian conservatories this year?

Auditions will NOT be held at any conservatories.

What is the deadline for applications?

The application must be received by 24:00 on October 20, 2018.

Can a non-EU student submit an application?

Non-EU students are admitted but cannot make up more than 20% of the orchestra. The Orchestra can issue a certificate of enrolment to support a study visa.

Do I have to be registered with ENPALS to participate in the Orchestra activities?

Registration with ENPALS [Italian National Institute of Social Security for Performers] is required in order to be able to participate in public concerts, therefore any students who have not yet done so, are invited to register with that office as soon as possible and notify the Orchestra Secretary.
