Gian Luca Lastraioli was born in Florence. 
After completing his studies at Bologna University and Conservatorio “Dall'Abaco” of Verona he started his professional career as lutenist and theorbist in 1982. 

He has participated in concerts and early music festivals in Italy, France, Denmark, Germany, Norway, Belgium, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Holland, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Israel, Great Britain, New Zealand, and Brasil.
During his career Gian Luca has recorded over forty CD's with the most important European recording labels among which the world premiere of the Medici Ballet Suites by Lorenzo Allegri, the world premiere of 17th Century opera L’Aurora Ingannata by Girolamo Giacobbi and the world premieres of the works by Enrico Radesca, Francesca Caccini and Cosimo Bottegari, always obtaining brilliant responses from the most varied audiences and constantly receiving outstanding press reviews.
As a musicologist he has edited and published the Complete Tablature Works of  Pietro Paolo Borrono (2008), Giovanni Ambrogio Dalza (2007), Giulio Cesare  Barbetta (2004), Bernardino Balletti (2002).
At present Gian Luca Lastraioli is Lute professor at the Conservatorio di Musica A. Boito (Parma, Italy) and professor of Lute at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole (Fiesole, Italy) and has beeen guest professor  at James Madison University (USA), Pepperdine University (USA) and Universidad Federal do Paraibo (Brasil).
In 2012 he was appointed Artistic and Musical Director of the European Lute Orchestra, with which he is constantly touring Europe.
